Functional Skills English

Functional skills are practical skills in English. It allows individuals to work confidently, effectively and independently in life. Individuals possessing these skills will be able to progress in education, training and employment and make a positive contribution to the communities in which they live and work.

Entry Level 1-3

Course Structure & Units

You will focus on developing your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills which will include learning how to:

  • Write letters
  • Fill in forms
  • Give directions
  • Practice spelling
  • Read & write with confidence plus more

Progression

You could progress onto a higher level of Functional Skills English (Level 1), vocational training, Apprenticeship, Further Education or Employment with training.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, but before beginning the course you will need to have a short assessment to make sure you are placed on the right level.

6 months – 1 year.

You will enhance your skills application and deployment across a range of contexts.
You will learn to further demonstrate your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills

Entry Requirements

Entry level 2-3 or level 1 Award in English, but before beginning the course you will have a short assessment to make sure you are placed on the right level.
Level 1 Literacy is equivalent to GCSE grades D-G or Key Skills Level 1.
Level 2 Literacy is equivalent to GCSE grades A-C or Key Skills Level 2.
